DIY Natural Perfumes with Essential Oils & Jojoba Oil
Today, I’m excited to share some fantastic recipes for creating your own homemade perfumes using jojoba oil and essential oils. Many branded perfumes on the market are expensive, and their ingredients are often unknown. They may contain synthetic chemicals that can be harmful to the body. Creating your own natural perfume is not only cost-effective but also ensures a pure, chemical-free fragrance tailored to your preferences.
Why Choose Oil-Based Perfumes?
Unlike alcohol-based perfumes, oil-based perfumes last longer on the skin. Jojoba oil, the perfect carrier oil, is odourless, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t leave a greasy residue. Combined with the rich, natural aromas of essential oils, it creates a luxurious and long-lasting fragrance.
Getting Started: Essential Oil Concentration
When crafting your perfume, the concentration of essential oils should range between 15% and 30%. For sensitive skin, stick to a 15% concentration, while a 30% blend offers a more intense and long-lasting scent. Remember, essential oils are potent, so exceeding the 30% limit can lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions.
Understanding Fragrance Notes
A well-balanced perfume is built on three layers of fragrance notes:
- Base Note: The foundation of your scent, lasting up to 6 hours or more. Common base notes include cedarwood, vetiver, cinnamon, sandalwood, and vanilla.
- Heart Note (Middle Note): The heart of the fragrance, emerging 10-20 minutes after application. Floral and herbal scents like jasmine, rose, sage, and geranium fall into this category.
- Top Note: The first impression of your perfume, which fades quickly. Citrus and herbal scents like lemon, orange, basil, and eucalyptus are typical top notes.
While these classifications are helpful, I love experimenting and blending scents intuitively. My goal is to create perfumes that are warm, spicy, and earthy, with a hint of sweetness and floral-citrus undertones.

- Allow the perfume to mature for at least 24-48 hours before using it for the best scent development.
- Experiment with different essential oil combinations to create your own signature scent.
- Apply perfume to pulse points like the wrists, neck, and behind the ears for a longer-lasting fragrance.
- If you have sensitive skin, perform a patch test before applying the perfume directly.
