DIY Shampoo Recipe – Step by Step
Ingredients for 500ml bottle:
Herbal Infusion – 317g (Made by steeping calendula, nettle, thyme, and rosemary in 500ml of distilled water)
70g of the infusion for mixing with clay
247g of the infusion for the rest of the ingredients
Ghassoul clay – 20g
Xanthan gum – 4g
Allantoin – 1.5g
Glycerin – 25g
Lauryl glucoside – 25g
Capryl glucoside or Coco glucoside – 100g
Essential oil (fir needle) – up to 50 drops
Preservative (DHA BA: Dehydroacetic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol) – 60-75 drops
Lactic acid – ~6 drops (to adjust pH)
Instructions:
Prepare the Herbal Infusion: Add calendula, nettle, thyme, and rosemary to 500ml of distilled water. Heat in a water bath for 10-15 minutes, keeping the water below boiling. Strain to remove plant particles. You’ll need 317g of the infusion.
Mix Ghassoul Clay: Take 70g of the infusion and mix with 20g of ghassoul clay. Set aside.
Dissolve Allantoin: Add 1.5g of allantoin to second part of still warm infusion.
Thicken with Xanthan Gum: Add 4g of xanthan gum, mixing well for a smooth gel-like consistency.
Add Surfactants: While the infusion is still warm, add 25g of lauryl glucoside followed by 100g of capryl glucoside. Stir gently to avoid foaming.
Incorporate Glycerin: Mix in 25g of glycerin for hydration, followed by the ghassoul clay mixture.
Add Essential Oil: I used fir needle essential oil (50 drops), but you can choose your favourite scent.
Preserve & Adjust pH: Add preservative (60-75 drops) and check the pH. The ideal pH is around 5, so adjust with lactic acid (~6 drops) if needed.
Bottle the Shampoo: Transfer to a clean, disinfected bottle and store for up to 6 months (best used within 3 months).
How to Use
Apply to wet hair and lather.
Shampoo twice for best results:
First wash removes dirt and oil.
Second wash provides a deep cleanse and boosts volume.
Rinse thoroughly and follow with a vinegar rinse for extra shine.
This shampoo produces a luxurious foam that leaves hair soft, clean, and full of life—no conditioner needed!
